Spring 2023 travel Important Scheduling Notes

Important Notes regarding Spring 2023 Season- for coaches, managers, field schedulers and referee assignors

  1. Generally smaller flights, with a tighter range of ability within flights- We used past data and extensive and early input from Clubs and Directors of Coaching to create flights consisting of a tighter range of ability.  The goal is to provide more balance across a flight.  Tighter competition and hopefully fewer lopsided games.  We will see how this plays out and adjust accordingly.

  2. Flights with odd numbers of teams and managing Byes-  In some cases we have ended up with flights with odd numbers of teams.  That means that every week, one team sits out, which is no fun.  We have been able to address this in some cases.  Specifically, where we ended up with two adjacent flights, both with odd numbers of teams, we paired up the two teams sitting out each week to schedule a CROSSOVER game.  For example, if the A flight has 5 teams and the B flight has 7, each week the A team on a Bye plays the B team that is on a bye that week.  Everywhere we could, we did this.  In some situations, there was no adjacent flight to pair up with.

    1. 3/28/2023 Please note, the scheduling system was set up to automatically pair up the two teams, however there were issues, so the Crossover game details will be sent to the clubs/teams via spreadsheet for now.

  3. Progressive Playoff for Flights with 4 or 6 teams-  With small divisions you end up playing some teams 2 and 3 times.  As a solution, for flights with 4 or 6 teams, your last 2 or 3 weeks of the season will mix it up by playing a progressive playoff.  More info to come.  For now, field assignors should know that if the schedule shows them with a home game those last 3 weeks, they will still be hosting a match on those dates.  But the opponent will be TBD rather than what is posted now.

  4. Small sided turf games on 4/2-  Where possible, we have clubs with small sided turf fields as the host team on 4/2 to hopefully take early season weather and field opening issues out of the equation.

  5. Sunday April 30th Glastonbury Tournament conflicts-  Many teams and clubs participate in this event to add another soccer experience to their team's season.  To the extent possible, we scheduled teams participating in the tournament to either be on a bye, or playing another team in their flight who is also playing in the Tournament.  The goal here is to not unduly burden teams not participating with the need to reschedule.  We could not do it in all cases, but I would say we are about 80% successful.. Of course, if there are an odd number of teams in a flight playing in Glastonbury, there will always be a situation we cannot resolve.
